Shape A Style Tip: Just Ruche It
The idea of adding more to your frame may sound about as thrilling as hearing Britney Spears actually sing, yet complimentary layers of texture can be found in one simple piece that creates interest without bulk. Ruching is an Old World technique that takes fabric or ribbon and gathers it in a repeat pattern. These gathers form an embellishment that can appear crinkled, but your shape landscape benefits from all the elasticity. A woman with an A figure can flatter her shape by balancing out the waist-to-hip ratio and filling out her upper-body proportions with a ruched design.
A ruched cardigan transitions well from day to night and makes a perfect cover-up for summer breezes. The modern and feminine gathers on Fever’s Ruched Cotton-Knit Cardi with Pointelle Peplum add definition to a slender bustline as more ruching and a slight ruffle highlight a puffed cap sleeve that helps to round out an A’s shoulders and keep them in perfect balance with her hips. The peplum adds yet another layer whose flare shows off the waist while offsetting the hip curve. Pull on a great pair of bootcut pants to finish this style story, and you’ll be all set to “ruche” out and flaunt a flattering new look.

Hi Barbara,
It’s always odd, I know, to compare a woman’s shape to a fruit, but this has been the standard. If you must be a fruit, we suggest being the sweetest and most stylish that you can be. Unlike an “apple” shape, which carries all the weight in the midsection, an A carries her curves in the hip and thigh area. Her figure is more similar to what’s typically called a “pear” shape. As are comparatively smaller on top, whereas an apple shape is proportioned all over. If you have been told that you are an apple shape, depending on your proportions, you could be an E or an H. I would suggest creating a Personal Shop with us—that way you will know how best to style your shape.

Hi Nikki,
Having children is a wonderful blessing that can alter a lot of things in your world, including your shape. As we go through the various stages of our lives—pregnancy and aging, in particular—our bodies change. Hips may become fuller, busts not as perky and waist a little less defined. I haven’t watched enough of the Discovery Channel to know all the reasons, but I know that change is not a bad thing. The MyShape philosophy is dress for the shape you have right now—not the one you had in high school or that stayed with you through your 20s. Embrace your current shape. We are here to help with any of your questions or style fears. Please contact your MyShape stylist at stylist@myshape.com, and she will be happy to select clothing for your new shape and style stage.
